Letter to Self: September 2017

So during our pre-service orientation for AmeriCorps in September, we were given a piece of paper to write a letter to our post-service self. Afterwards, we sealed them up in envelopes to be delivered to us during our exit session. Today, at 9 am, I was handed my letter from September! I had totally forgotten about it, so it was a pleasant surprise. I truly had no idea what I had written to myself, so I was pumped to open it.

We were supposed to answer these two questions:

What are your goals for this year of service, both professionally and personally?

and

What advice do you want to give to your future self?

Naturally, I decided to just write whatever felt right to me at the time. September Juliana hit June Juliana right where she needed it.

9/6/17

Juliana,

Above all, have hope. Right now I still really don’t know what to expect, but I do have hope. My goals are to make an impact, be uncomfortable, stay energetic, and love fully and without hesitation. I think I’ve created all these expectations of what to expect (lol) but in actuality there’s no way to know. I hope this year challenges you in ways you’ve never experienced before. I hope you laugh and cry and sing and dance. I hope that when you emerge on the other side of all this you are kinder, braver, more adventurous, less judgmental, and ready and willing to be flexible.

What comes next, Juliana? Does it make you want to cry out of fear of the unknown? Does it fill you up? I hope that you haven’t just let this year flash before your eyes. I hope you have gripped onto every moment and felt it fully. I hope that you’ll know the highest of highs and lowest of lows.

Juliana, don’t be scared to do the things you want to do. You can do them. Well done and good luck. You are loved.

Juliana

And now, hot dang, here we are. Finished with AmeriCorps, excitedly and nervously waiting on what comes next, full of hope and doubt, someone new and somehow still the same.

If you do anything today, I encourage you to do one act of service for someone. When we all feel so divided and polarized, I know that sharing a moment of service with someone reminds you of how human we all are.

“We’re all just walking each other home.”

So let’s make that journey as beautiful and peaceful for each other as we possibly can.

Love,

Juliana

The Good News

Welcome to The Good News! A little slice of the Internet dedicated to sharing good news and inspiring hope that the world is a better place than it seems. My aim is to not erase the important current events that do require attention and action, but to at least create a small trickle of goodness to refill buckets empty from despair.

My hope for The Good News is to receive crowd-sourced stories of goodwill, generosity, love, and inspiration. A place to seek out when the world seems painful and dark. A gentle, but firm, reminder that humans are pretty dang cool. Let’s discuss matters constructively and be willing to learn always. Let’s lift up tales of kindness and light. Let us become light ourselves.

So please! Email me a happy story you have to share! Someone you love graduated recently? You saw a stranger help another stranger out? Send them to me!

Love,

Juliana

only light can do that.
