Greenbelt Adventure Run

Holy guacamole guys. I just had so much fun! Yesterday I headed to the Greenbelt here in ATX for a trail run, but I was getting eaten up by mosquitoes so I called it quits after only 1.8 miles. So today I headed there again covered head to toe in sunscreen and bug spray (welcome to TX)!

I ended up getting pretty lost, running into some obstacles, stumbling onto some homeless camps, seeing some beautiful stuff, and STILL getting attacked by mosquitoes…

Nonetheless, it was awesome and I swear I will know the trails like the back of my hand by the time I graduate UT.

Rather than try to ramble on what I can remember, I’m just going to throw a bunch of pictures at you and comment on them!

Lost selfie. I had just climbed up that “path”… And by climbed, I really do mean climbed! It was way steep.

THIS BRIDGE. Oh my word. Okay, I was seriously lost on what I thought were trails  – word of advice: Just because it looks like trail DOES NOT MEAN IT IS ONE. 😉 I crossed it once, ran for about a half a mile until I dead ended at a homeless camp. I filmed it the second time I crossed it but the video is blurry because it was on my phone. The smart thing to do would have been to climb down into the ravine and then climb back up the other side (it was about 4-5 ft down) but instead I did what any reckless adventurer would do and decided to cross the dang bridge. It rocked.

FRIDAY!

Good morning and happy Friday! It’s the weekend! 

I don’t have much on the agenda which I am insanely pleased about. I was going to do a brick workout with Texas Triathlon this morning, but I woke up and ate breakfast and went back to sleep. My whole body felt droopy and I ended up sleeping for two more hours, so I guess I needed it! Last night I swam 2200 yards at Greg! That’s a little over 1.2 miles. It made me even more excited for 70.3 in a couple weeks!

Also, if you know me you know that I am addicted to coffee. Well, yesterday I went caffeine free all day! Coffee didn’t sound very appetizing in the morning and I felt pretty great all day, so I went without it! However, today, as I write this my pot of coffee is finishing brewing. 😉 I am weaning myself off of so much caffeine though. My coffee is half-caff!

I’m in the mood to cook and bake today, so maybe I’ll have a recipe later!

Running Woes

I’m getting confused.

My running has been all over the place lately.

During running class I can crank out 8:15 min/miles. I ran with my dad last weekend and I felt chatty , using little effort, and completely nonwinded during a 5K at 9:40 min/miles. And yet, when I go out to run by myself I’m hitting the 10:30 range.

WHY.

I’m not too worried because I know I have it in me to run further and faster, but I’m just struggling to reach it.

(Maybe I should invest in a fancy schamncy Garmin to stay more aware of my mile splits?)

This week I had two back to back rest days (purely from busyness) and last night’s run was still an effort.

I know that the temperature plays a huge role in my pace, so I can’t wait until it cools down.

Also, I’m really excited for the Oilman coming up (SO SOON) but I can’t wait to start marathon training afterwards. Running is my love. And my training plan has me running 5 times a week with 2 rest days.

Sunday morning I am going to aim for an 8-9 mile run considering I have been majorly slacking on my long runs. Honestly, I think I am in desperate need for a running buddy.

Any volunteers? 😉

McKinney Falls

I went to McKinney Falls State Park today! I came home from work, had an early lunch, then spontaneously threw water and an apple into my backpack and hit the road!

Oh and guess what, I live like 10 minutes away from the park. And I also put on some sunscreen and bug spray! 😉

I brought my swimsuit because the falls are open for swimming but I decided to hike a trail instead.

I wore my fakeos. Fake chacos.

When I got home, I took a really intense nap. Seriously. I didn’t think I was going to fall asleep, but I ended up passing out for almost two hours. And I’m still so sleepy!

Tomorrow morning I have work and then my brother and I are driving to Dallas to go bungee jumping! 😀

Fall 2014: The Semester Juliana’s Brain Exploded

Good morning!
I’m currently sitting outside my 8 a.m. attempting to will the caffeine in my system to actually wake me up. Hahahaha! Actually, I saved this as a draft and now I’m killing time before I clock into work for my 8.5 hour shift! :O

Only one more week of class and then finals. I have two final tests and a final essay, but I’m not too worried! I’m ready for Dead Days so that I can truly get in the study zone.

I am beyond ready for summer and freedom and fun.
However, just a couple days ago I registered for my fall semester.

6 classes for 16 hours + the class I’m an UGLA for. it’s going to be a busy semester. But I’m pumped!

Here are my classes:

NTR 312 INTRO TO NUTRITIONAL SCIENCE
Biochemical, physiological, and cellular functions of energy macronutrients, vitamins and minerals, and the scientific basis for current dietary and nutrient recommendations. Designed for science majors.

BIO 325 GENETICS
Basic principles of Mendelism, molecular genetics, structure and function of genes and chromosomes, populations and evolution.

NTR 306 FUNDAMENTALS OF NUTRITION
Essential food components and their functions in life processes.

CH 320M ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I
Primarily for premedical, predental, life sciences, and pharmacy majors. Development of organic chemical structure, nomenclature, and reactivity.

NTR 112L INTRO TO NUTRITIONAL SCI LAB
Collection and evaluation of dietary intake data, nutrient composition of food, and survey of dietetic practice.

SOC 302 INTRO TO THE STUDY OF SOCIETY
The nature of human societies, social processes, social interaction, and the sociological approach.

+the UGS course that I’m an assistant for! I’m required to attend, but I didn’t have to register for it!

How has yours been?
Mine has been super random.

I woke up this morning and couldn’t decide whether to ride my bike to school or take the bus. I had a gut feeling that I should’ve just taken my bike, but my legs wanted to chill so I rode the bus.

Well, after sitting through my literature lecture, I headed to the bus only to find that the buses were on lockdown!

You see, I attend UT Austin (hook ’em!) and we are currently having a Civil Rights Summit in LBJ Library. President Obama is here along with George Bush and Bill Clinton and other important people! Because of this, security is strict.

I decided that I was too impatient to wait for the bus and I also happened to be wearing my running shoes… Do you see where this is going?
I dumped my heaviest books in my locker, ate a cereal bar (?) snack and then:
I ran 4.1 miles home with my backpack on and walked the last .5!

I passed by a Juiceland so I bought and drankchugged a Marathon Man {pineapple, beets, flax oil}.

I was disgustingly sweaty (read: sweat was dripping into my eyes and burning them) so when she handed me my juice she said “good luck with your marathon!” Um, yeah. I had only done 3.1 but it probably looked like I was on mile 26!

Hahaha : )

I thought my backpack bouncing would drive me insane but it wasn’t too bad. Who needs vehicular transportation when you have your legs?!

Now I’m just chilling and thinking about going on a longer run later!

Went to my bio discussion & lit lecture!
Scarfed down a delicious and simple salad.
Ran 4 miles! {In celebration of April of course!}

Took a shower.
Started writing this post!

Later, I have work and then I’m headed to campus to write up my lab report for inorganic chem with NO distractions.

Check!

Hey! I went to a coffee shop today to study for my bio test this Friday. I ordered the bottomless iced coffee and ended up drinking two glasses… At 5 p.m..

Yeah, bad idea. Afterwards, I went to Gregory to swim laps. I wanted to get another workout in and I was trying to tire myself out. However, after 700 yards, my stomach started to really hurt so I called it quits. ):

And now, it is 11:14 and I am WIDE AWAKE! I even went to HEB just a bit ago to buy bananas because I randomly decided that I desperately needed them for breakfast.

I also had a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios because my stomach is a bottomless pit today.

Anyway, on to the actual point of this post!

Remember how I said I had the best Saturday ever? Well, I realized later that when we grilled that night, we had checked this off my list!

#11 Make something from Pinterest! Completed 3.30.14
To be 100% honest, I did bake something new-to-me, but it wasn’t from my pins! Hahahaha! I made Martha Stewart’s raspberry cream cookies! Mmmmm. I gave them away to Sabrina and Mathew because it was too tempting to have them around! They were basically just two sugar cookies held together by a raspberry-white chocolate cream! I even had to ride my bike to HEB to buy more sugar and all-purpose flour and white chocolate. It was fun!

#4 Mozart’s. Completed 3.31.14
Today! It was the coffee shop I went to! Hahaha! Look it up Mozart’s Coffee. I had been years ago with Sabrina and I wanted to go myself. It’s on the lake and the patio is so nice! The weather was perfect, too. Next time I’d like to go at night! I didn’t take any pictures really because I was being a flashcard making machine. 😉 The place smells like something odd is burning but that’s because they actually roast their beans on location! I loved it!

BEST DAY EVER

Today I had the best day ever. Without a doubt!

I’ll take you through it, frame by frame!

First:

I woke up bright & early (6 a.m.) to head to Bastrop State Park for my long run on the trails! I can;t complain though. This was my view on the drive.

Once, I got there I immediately began running! On the actual trails! It was SO MUCH FUN! mean, I love to run, but this was incredibly fun for me! 🙂 I was aiming for 17 miles, but trails are much more challenging to run on, so I ended at 13.1 miles. I wasn’t the least bit disappointed. It was incredible!

Afterwards, I quickly stretched and had a mini refuel picnic at the park before I left!

Oh, I also tried out my new handheld Camelbak bottle! It was perfect! But more on that later.

As I was headed home, Sabrina invited me to go rock climbing. The endorphins were still flowing so I said heck yeah! Right before she picked me up I got super tired though. I fixed that with a ginormous ball jar of iced coffee.

We went to the Greenbelt! It was Mathew, Sabrina, their friend Josh, and myself! Crazy fun!

I tend to cling to the rock (even though I wouldn’t actually fall) so I get a bit sliced up and bruised! I even left a blood mark close to where my knee was in that picture!

After rock climbing, Sabrina, Mathew, and myself made dinner! There was grilled chicken, sausage, asparagus, and vegetables on a stick! 😀 Oh, and don’t forget these awesome bad boys…

For dessert, we had watermelon. All enjoyed outside as the sun was setting in the warm beautiful Spring weather!

Once I got home, I finally took a shower and now I;m writing all this! 

It was seriously an amazing day. SO SO SO AMAZING! 

Now I should go to sleep soon! My body is tired and I have work in the morning!

Thoughts

This is going to be extremely random. I’m warning you now.

So I’m sitting in Thunderbird Coffee (a stone throw from Sabrina & Mathew’s house!) and the music is putting me in an odd thoughtful trance, so here goes…

1st: I’m homeless now. To me, home is not necessarily a place. Home is just something that makes you feel so safe and secure and comfortable. Home can be a place but it can also be an activity or a person that you take comfort in. Well, my home is no longer. I don’t consider running my home because it’s more like my vacation haha! Anyway, as I realized this yesterday, I began to feel so sad. But then I remembered, I’ve always wanted to be a vagabond. I’ve always known that I have wanderlust in my bones. Now I’m free to act on it.

2nd: My first college spring break has been anything but wild. Yesterday I felt so bored and lazy and it was KILLING me. However, I then realized that it was my chance to enjoy me time and just relax. So that’s what I did. I’ve also gotten ~10 hours of sleep for both of the past nights which is unheard of for me! yay for catching up on sleep!

3rd: Happy Pi Day! Today I ran a very fast 3.14 miles in celebration! As I was running, I thought about the Rookie Tri that I’m signed up for in the beginning of May and I got so insanely excited. I love feeling my body get stronger and stronger everyday. It’s the one thing that I get to be in control of.

4th: Bluebonnets are slowly but surely popping up 🙂 if you know me, you know I love flowers! So you can imagine the giant smile that pops onto my face every time I see one!

5th: Iced coffee makes me weirdly hungry. Good thing I brought a Pumpkin Pie ALT larabar!

6th: I’ve decided to plan a freaking awesome summer trip. Where and when? Yo no se. But it will be amazing.
