Hey hey! Happy Monday!
Lucky for me, I am done with classes for the day.

My Monday looked a bit like this:
-Breakfast {two waffles w/ almond butter, pumpkin, banana, cinnamon, honey, and chia seeds}
-Ride to school
-Bio
-Chem
-1000 yard swim (!!)
-Lunch break
-Body weight exercises

I have studying to do and a work meeting later, but other than that, I’m just chilling! : )

Snickerdoodles.

I just got the most random, most intense craving for snickerdoodles. I don’t even really recall liking snickerdoodles, but I want them.

Anyway, I’m here to update you on my training! But that seemed a bit boring, so I’ve decided to make it into a list!

Kind of like a “you know you’re training when…” But really it’s just a list of random random things that I’ve experienced or thought about..

1. The post-run feeling is 25% endorphins and 75% exhaustion.
2. The post-run hunger hits you almost a full 24 hours later!
3. Setting a PDR in the pool makes you so proud! {1100 yards!}
4. Carbs become your best friend.
5. You actually are starting to need more carbs than you can keep up with! {I thought I was the carb queen!}
6. You become well acquainted with the dreaded “wall” when you’re setting PDRs on every Sunday run.
7. People ask if you’ve been going to the lake when really the tan is from running outside.
8. Tart cherry juice is actually quite tasty.
9. Ice baths aren’t as bad as everyone says!
10. Not even 9 hours of sleep is enough.
11. Discovering your food is missing is enough to make anyone angry, but it’s multiplied by ten when I’m already hangry from working out.
12. My pants for work are loose in the hips and tight in the thighs.
13. You’re worried about split ends since showers are being taken so often.
14. You know your legs are tired when going uphill on the lowest gear feels impossible.
15. Pre-workout snacks are a must!

Okay that’s it! Hahaha

P.S. I would run/bike/swim five times faster than my normal pace if this stud muffin was waiting for me at the finish line! 😉

In the beginning…

My healthy lifestyle is not even a year old. I’m not 100% sure of the actual date I decided to make the switch, but I’m going to go with somewhere in mid June 2013.

I’ve learned a lot since then and I’ve changed the way I eat and treat my body with the information I pick up on.

For example, I’m a firm believer that your body craves what it needs (to an extent, of course.) Last week, I unintentionally carboloaded because I was out of town and carby foods are typically the cheapest and most convenient. I kicked myself for it at the time, but that weekend I went on my 15 mile long run. Never hit the wall once. I had blueberries in my baby fanny pack and I didn’t need to touch them once. Heck to the yeah.

So today, I finally caved and made muffins. I had been wanting to make muffins to stash in my freezer, but I was too lazy until today. The muffins are fairly random but yummy. They are made with whole wheat, egg, milk, Greek yogurt, brown sugar, carrots, raisins, and nuts. As soon as they came out of the oven, I ate one. And then another. And then a third. An hour later, I are a fourth.

Along with a small cup of cereal with milk.

Um, what? The weirdest part was my stomach still didn’t feel truly satisfied. I didn’t get that urgh I’m full feeling.

I’m going to assume my body was in need of carbs and calcium. I know it wasn’t just a sugar craving, because I have 72% and 85% dark chocolate in my closet! Instead, my body chose to crave the wholesome muffins. No regrets.

This morning I ran 3.14 miles (hey it’s pi day!) at an 8:50 pace. That is insanely fast for me! Later, I ran the three stories of stairs by my apartment 5x. It wasn’t a whole lot of work to be craving carbs so badly, but my body knows what it needs better than I do.

Funny huh?

Anyway, back to the point. I initially started to eat healthy because I wanted to have bulging quads. No joke. That was my initial goal. I admire muscular legs more than anything else and that’s what I wanted.

Slowly but surely, that goal morphed into simply losing weight. I wasn’t counting calories, but i was very careful about what I ate. My only extra snack during the day was a pre workout snack.

Again, the goal morphed into losing weight and being muscular. So in order to do that, I started to ditch the pre workout snack. People, that is so dumb.

Thank the heavens, my goal shifted again to what it is now. Getting stronger every single day. I think what finally made that my goal was absolutely falling in love with running. And I haven’t looked back.

Now, I know to appreciate my body and everything it asks for. I’ve gained weight since officially realizing this goal, but I know it is from muscle.

To me, getting stronger and healthier is waaaaay better than just focusing on being skinny. I’ve developed physical and mental strength because of it.

I have one spectacular half marathon under my belt and now I’m so ready for more.

Rookie Tri -> Oilman Tri -> Ironman
Half marathon -> Marathon -> Ultra

You better believe it!

I know this post is pretty lengthy, but I felt the need to write this all out.

I dream of being an inspiration to many, because I know how inspiring some women for me (especially reading their blogs!)

Thoughts

This is going to be extremely random. I’m warning you now.

So I’m sitting in Thunderbird Coffee (a stone throw from Sabrina & Mathew’s house!) and the music is putting me in an odd thoughtful trance, so here goes…

1st: I’m homeless now. To me, home is not necessarily a place. Home is just something that makes you feel so safe and secure and comfortable. Home can be a place but it can also be an activity or a person that you take comfort in. Well, my home is no longer. I don’t consider running my home because it’s more like my vacation haha! Anyway, as I realized this yesterday, I began to feel so sad. But then I remembered, I’ve always wanted to be a vagabond. I’ve always known that I have wanderlust in my bones. Now I’m free to act on it.

2nd: My first college spring break has been anything but wild. Yesterday I felt so bored and lazy and it was KILLING me. However, I then realized that it was my chance to enjoy me time and just relax. So that’s what I did. I’ve also gotten ~10 hours of sleep for both of the past nights which is unheard of for me! yay for catching up on sleep!

3rd: Happy Pi Day! Today I ran a very fast 3.14 miles in celebration! As I was running, I thought about the Rookie Tri that I’m signed up for in the beginning of May and I got so insanely excited. I love feeling my body get stronger and stronger everyday. It’s the one thing that I get to be in control of.

4th: Bluebonnets are slowly but surely popping up 🙂 if you know me, you know I love flowers! So you can imagine the giant smile that pops onto my face every time I see one!

5th: Iced coffee makes me weirdly hungry. Good thing I brought a Pumpkin Pie ALT larabar!

6th: I’ve decided to plan a freaking awesome summer trip. Where and when? Yo no se. But it will be amazing.

#5 // Catching Up

So I made a bucket list.

It’s not a “Things I want to do before I die” kind of bucket list. It’s just a list of things I want to do that will make me happy. Things that make me appreciate and fully live and enjoy my life.

I’m not going to post the whole bucket list, but instead, I will simply give you updates as I mark things off!

The list is written on a poster board that’s taped to my bathroom door. There’s plenty of space to add more and more 🙂 

#5 Eat at a food truck. 

Accomplished on March 11, 2014.

I’ve been wanting to do this since I’ve lived in Austin, but I just simply never got around to it. Until yesterday.

 Blake came into town to chill with me for a bit, so for lunch we went to a food truck called Cow Bells! It was so good and I had been wanting to specifically go to that one!

 I got a veggie burger with all the fixin’s and sweet potato fries! 😀

Not to mention, we got to sit at a PICNIC TABLE OUTSIDE! YAY! I was so pleased and so happy!

Right after that we went to HEB where I got a peach for dessert {peach season is coming y’all} and the kite as seen in yesterday’s post!

 I am definitely looking forward to adding and marking things off my list! Because if there’s anything I’ve learned this past week it’s that nothing is more powerful than forgiveness and that life is meant to be lived.

Now, let’s transition to today! Blake and  I went to the outlet mall in San Marcos! I had one store in mind. The Nike Outlet. T’was marvelous.

I bought THREE pairs of shorts for a grand total of ~$75.

That seems like SO much, but I really practically never ever buy clothes.

Besides, I’m training for a marathon and a half Ironman, so having clothes to train in is important! 😉

I’ll model the shorts for you some other time!

A little while later, Blake headed home to Magnolia and I hit up the g-y-m in my apartment complex. I never really use it because I think it’s fairly lame, but it was nice to pump some iron!

I did mostly abs and arms because my legs are soooorrreeeee.

Yesterday night, Erica and I sprinted/raced each other around Town Lake. We agreed that I definitely have more endurance than her, but her long legs and stride dominate me in sprints. I only beat her once! AND she gave me a head start! Whatevs. Watch out, Erica. I’m going to come back with venegeance! 😉

Anyway, it’s been so beautiful outside today, but it’s too chilly to sit outside in a tank top and shorts!

Instead, I’ve been enjoying the coolness with the window and blinds open! I’m in the mood to bake, but definitely NOT in the mood for sweets… Anyone want some baked goods shipped to them? 😉 (but for real!)

Ramble rambly.

I have many random things to tell you.
Some have a common theme. Some do not.
Let’s do this.

1. Today while I was waiting at the bus stop (I was too cold and lazy for my bike) I saw this perfectly good cookie on the ground. ): it even looked like chocolate chip. Sorry cookie.

2. Because it was muy frio (well not really) and I hadn’t gotten much sleep last night, I brought my cafe to school.

3. Today I had a swim workout planned. I wanted to do 1000 yards, but I was hungraaaayy. I ended up doing 500. 300 yards casual and comfortable. 100 yards sprint with just my arms. 100 yard cool down. I am a little tanner because the sun was out!

4. Today I went University Health Services for some junk and while I was there I got weighed on a scale. I’ve decided not to weigh myself daily or weekly or ever! I like to base it off of how I feel in my clothes and more importantly, in my own skin. Well, I was up 5 pounds since the last time I weighed myself (early December.) but you know what? I felt ridiculously happy when I saw the number. Want to know why? Because I have felt better than ever in my body lately. And I KNOW that those pounds are muscle. My ever increasing number of push ups and running pace tells me that :]

5. Another confidence booster: Today at work, a usual came in for her iced coffee. We chatted about running and exercising and overall health. She asked if I had been in cross country and track throughout high school. I told her no. She asked “well what sport? You were obviously an athlete.” Again I told her no. She stared at me and said “you are an athlete though! Your whole body is athletic!” I almost died of happiness. I then told her that for all of high school I was technically overweight. It was an awesome, freeing moment.

6. Tomorrow I have work in the morning and then I am cranking out 14 miles with my own two legs. Heck to the yeah.

7. I went to whole foods today and bought more stuff… Hahaha so dinner turned out to be a slice of Seeduction bread, unsweetened banana chips, and almond butter. I didn’t have time to go home before work so I just snacked on what I bought!

8. Well that wasn’t a very substantial dinner. About 20 minutes ago I decided that I wouldn’t be able to sleep with my stomach rumbling so much. I headed to the kitchen, ate three slices of turkey, some flax tortilla chips, and a hard boiled egg. It hit the spot. And was jam packed with protein.

9. But now my stomach hurts :[

10. My mom is having surgery tomorrow morning (nothing major, so I’ve been told) so keep her in your thoughts!

Gooooood morning, America!

Hey hey hey!

I’m writing this as I drink my iced coffee before I ride to school today! :]

Today is such a great day already and here’s why:

For breakfast I had: 2 toaster waffles {1 GF, 1 whole wheat} w/ 1/2 mashed banana, PB, pumpkin, honey, cinnamon, and chia!

I am drinking my coffee ICED because the weather is warming up!

I only have class from 9-11 today because I finished my lab on Monday!

SO that means that after chem, I’m headed to the gym! :]

I went out to the back porch to check the temperature and there were three dear running around in the field! ❤ And the birds were chirping!

YAY!

I love Spring!

I bought mosquito repellent and sunscreen yesterday in celebration! Hahaha :]

Yippeykayay! Today is already great and it’s only 7:23! I plan on just making today get better and better,

I hope all of you are enjoying this warmer weather! {Well, if you live in TEXAS at least!}

Coffee or Tea?

Let’s pretend that you and I are sitting down for a coffee (or tea) “date”!

It’s time to catch up! :]

If we were on a coffee date, I would tell you:

1. I have recently become obsessed with Ellie Goulding’s album Halcyon Days. // Specifically “Don’t Say a Word”, “JOY”, “Explosions”, and “I Know You Care”

2. Tomorrow, I have a killer freaking awesome training day planned. // Ride to campus. Swim with Sabrina. Run x# miles. Ride home. {Of course, this will all be spread throughout the day.}

3. Tomorrow, I am also meeting some of the kids from Magnolia attending UT at Chipotle for lunch. YAY for gift cards! ;]

4. Oranges are my new fruit obsession.

5. I’m trying to focus more on protein now. This does not mean paleo.

6. I took my first chem test tonight! It was over physical equilibria. I felt pretty good about it! :]

7. Alex is coming to Austin in t-minus NINE days! ❤

8. My half marathon is in 12 days and I could not be more excited!

9. Riding to school >>> Taking the bus

10. New friends are really cool.

Rain Day // Rest Day

Hello friends,

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! I will not be watching the game today. Why? Well, for one, I don’t really know who’s even playing. Two, more importantly, I don’t care who is playing. And three, I don’t even know what channel it would be on anyway! ;]

Instead, my Sunday has been productive and also so lazy. 

It’s been productive because I have:

  1. Washed all the dishes & towels
  2. Grocery shopped a bit {yay for quality toilet paper!}
  3. Met up to study for chemistry
  4. Finished chemistry homework

Today has been lazy because it is a rest day. I’ve been thinking to myself lately how much I truly love to run and workout and I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize that! So, to prevent injury, overtraining, or getting sick, I am taking a rest day today. It also happened to perfectly land on a cold, cloudy, rainy day, so I don’t feel bad about missing out on the sunshine. There is none! And seriously, people, I’ve done nothing but chill. Normally, when I have a “rest” day, I always do some abs or some light weight arm stuff, but NOT TODAY. It’s pretty hard to resist, but I know it’s for the best.

I am currently training for three races…. Hahaha:

The Austin Half Marathon on February 16! Two weeks! :] I am so excited and beyond ready! 

The Rookie Tri on May 4th! 300 m swim, 11.2 mile bike, 2 mile run. I’ve done this race before,  but I didn’t put much effort… This time I want to go fast!

Oilman Texas Triathlon on November 4th! 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run. It will be an exhilarating challenge! {The official training plan for that starts in July…}

But since this semester has started, I have upped my training. More running, more cycling, more strength training. 

And it makes me so very hungry. Like all the time. Luckily, when the hunger strikes, it’s healthy cravings. But it’s still hard not to grab a spoon and a peanut butter jar and eat to my heart’s content.

I’ve been focusing more on protein, but mainly lean sources like tuna or salmon {in a can}, and chicken. I also really love ground turkey, but I am currently out!

I know that muscle burns more calories than fat, so it’s kind of to be expected. But I’ve never felt like this before! At least I know my metabolism is roaring! ;]

In other news, today when I met with a friend to work on chem, we went to a coffee shop called Bennu Coffee. I ordered a soy steamer {basically a latte, but with coffee and not espresso} and it was so delicious. 

Alright, I’m off to just lounge around some more and try to resist the urge to eat all my food!

Double days

Helllooooo,

Today has been so. incredibly. long.

But in a really good way! :]

Here’s the play by play ;]

I woke up at 8ish and had a bowl of Kashi Honey O’s with 1/2 a banana, a handful of blueberries, and almond milk. Coffee followed soon after along with an attempt to tackle some chem homework!

Then, just as I was gearing up for a run, Sabrina texted me asking if I had run yet! We ended up running together at a pleasant, casual pace. My quads are reaaaaal sore from squats last night, so I didn’t know how much I’d be able to do. We settled on 3 miles because it was February 1st! 2/1… 2+1=3. ;] We ended up doing 3.19 miles so yay for 5K!

Afterwards, I came home and didn’t shower. Why? Because Sabrina and I had another workout planned for the day.

But first I made lunch! A spinach salad with salmon, raisins, nuts, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, cucumber, and beets! Quickly followed by a piece of 72% Ghiradelli chocolate {I’m almost out!} and a really juicy orange.

I worked on my homework a bit more and then it was time for workout numero dos!

I rode my bike to campus where I met Sabrina for a swim session. It was exhausting. And I was so hungry! I ate half of a protein bar as fuel {1/4 before workout, 1/4 after.}

I did 400 yards, but pretty spread out! I need to build up my swim endurance stat! As soon as we finished, I jetted home on my bike, well as fast as my quads would allow, to shower up! I also quickly ate 1/2 a whole wheat wrap with a schmear of hummus and a few slices of turkey.

Why was I rushing?

I had to meet some girls from my bio class for a study session! We went to a place called Quack’s Bakery on 43rd. I ordered a single soy latte and was sadly not impressed :[ Nonetheless, the studying went well! It was nice to have some things clarified and helping them with some stuff reaffirmed what I already understood. We studied and reviewed for two hours.

When I finally got home, I quickly got to work on dinner. I roasted up some sweet potato, zucchini, and brussel sprouts. On the stove, I sauteed some spinach and then threw in an egg! It was delicious, but not as filling as I had hoped. Just a little while after, I had the other half of that wrap with PB and jelly and then some strawberries with almond butter.

Now my tummy is happy and my body is so very tired.

I want to finish that chem homework before I study with a friend tomorrow, but I just don’t know if I can muster up the energy for it! I’d much rather just get in bed and watch The Big Bang Theory.

Hmmm, we shall see!

Tomorrow I’m hoping to get up early enough to go to some free yoga. I’ve wanted to go before but I’m always too tired.

I also really want to run again tomorrow, but it’s also time to start tapering soooooo…. #thestruggleisreal
